If you’re European, in a couple of weeks you will be denied any and all access to fandom contents on Tumblr and everywhere else on the internet. Here’s why.
On June, 20th the JURI of European Parliament approved of the articles 11 and 13 of the new Copyright Law. These articles are also known as the “Link Tax” and the “Censorship Machines” articles.
Articles 13 in particular forces every internet platform to filter all the contents we upload online, ending once and for all the fandom culture. Which means you won’t be able to upload any type of fandom works like fan arts, fan fictions, gif sets from your favourite films and series, edits, because it’s all copyrighted material. And you won’t also be able to share, enjoy or download other’s contents, because the use of links will be completely restricted.
But not everything’s lost yet. There’s another round of voting scheduled for the early days of July.
What you can do now to save our internet, is to share these informations with all of your family members and friends, and to ask to your MEP (the members of the European Parliament from your country) to vote NO at the next round, to vote against articles 11 and 13.
Here you can find more news and all the details to contact your MEP:
You can sign the petition even if you are non-European. I recommend you do, as many of us fan content creators are indeed in Europe. We would also lose access to non-European fan creations, meaning less readers, less fans and less customers for your home-made merch, commissions and such for you.
I’m reblogging this to FUZZY as this is extremely important. If I lose access to Tumblr, you will lose access to FUZZY. I would most likely even lose access to Webtoons, as it does have fan comics! Not to mention Patreon is not safe from this either.
I mean you’ve probably got that impression already but honestly, they are really, really bad. Especially if you like uploading fanfiction to websites like AO3.
At the moment, the way the law is phrased is likely to mean everything you upload in Europe, to any website that allows user-created content, will need to be automatically scanned for copyright violations.
You know YouTube’s automatic content filter? Imagine having that for the entire internet. We already know that copyright trolls exploit YouTube’s system in a bunch of ways, making money off user content they have no actual rights to, and shutting down legitimate user content.
But here’s where it gets worse: Websites that host user-generated content – including fanfiction – will be responsible for putting those filters in place and maintaining them themselves.
This law would in all likelihood require AO3 to implement a system which monitors every single work uploaded in Europe for copyright violations, before they can be shared on the Archive.
We’re talking full-on “robotic censorship regime”, as the Electronic Frontier Federation puts it.
Not only would that be that icky and invasive. Not only would it ignore the complexity of copyright exceptions like Fair Dealing. Not only would it be easy to exploit by copyright trolls. It would also be a massive, massive burden on an organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. The sheer volume of work AO3’s coders, wranglers, and policy and abuse staff take on – for free, in their own time – is already staggering.
And while AO3 is a pretty robust archive, and might miraculously be able to find the resources to comply with this ridiculous law, there are many, many smaller websites out there that would seriously struggle. Other non-profits, libraries, and archives, who would all have to either build automatic content filters from the ground up – or more likely, pay for off-the-shelf “solutions” that are overpriced and ineffective.
The European Parliament’s legal committee has just voted (in June 2018) to press forward with the law, but we’ve probably still got until at least early 2019 before the whole Parliament votes on it. The timing is about as good as it gets – the next European Parliament election is expected in May 2019, so our MEPs are going to be worrying about re-election right when we need to put pressure on them (that’s now!).
Europe has managed to reject bad legislation in the past. We can do it again this time. Please do what you can to spread the word or get involved!
If you click on the OTW link in the text, you will see the information screengrabbed above.
EU and UK readers, we can do something here and the OTW have basically given us a script if we want one.
Pewdiepie, Jacksepticeye, DanTDM, Daniel Howell, Phil Lester, Caspar, Marzia, and many more.
Anyone and everyone in Europe will no longer be able to view fanwork, Let’s Plays, memes, etc. This is so much worse than Net Neutrality will/would be.
So you’ve got this typical story about an average kid right? Only, surprise surprise, he actually turns out to be more than average. See, one day, when he was just minding his own business, he’s suddenly told that he is this super-being who has to save the world from evil. Again, it’s your basic tropes all lined up and ready to go.
Only here’s the thing.
The kid?
He runs away.
And this isn’t just a “Oh, I need some time to think but I’ll come around in a day or two and fulfill my destiny.”
No this kid is gone. For the first time in his life, this kind and generous kid makes a selfish decision. He knows what the consequences are. He knows what’s at stake. He knows that lives are going to be in danger. And he still chooses to run away.
Things take an abrupt turn when he gets into an accident and he ends up in a coma. He wakes up years later and guess what? Him running away from his duties that day? Yeah it kind of caused the entire world to be plunged into chaos. This kid, this kid, is now responsible for thousands upon thousands of deaths.
At the age of twelve, this kind pacifist single-handedly becomes a mass-murderer by association. All because he ran away.
A few older teenagers find him and immediately help him. They don’t think much of it. They’re used to helping out anyone they can. After all, the war has killed people they love, family, friends. So they help this kid before they even realize that he’s destined. And this kid, this kid isn’t even fully aware of just how many people he inadvertently killed.
Until they go to the ‘city’ where he was from. He doesn’t understand why they’re so worried but when he gets there…he gets it. There is no ‘city’. Not anymore. It’s abandoned ruins lined with skeletons—his friends, his family. He finds his father’s corpse. He finds signs of a struggle. Everyone he knew is dead. And there are so many more. Hundreds. Thousands. All dead. All because of him.
He’s a good kid, a great kid. He wouldn’t hurt a fly.
And he led to thousands of deaths.
All because he ran away.
And this entire story is just the first three episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. (Four if you count borrowing some information from The Storm.)
Avatar showed all of this in just three episodes. Actually it showed this and more. Because this is just one character’s story and they introduced us to half a dozen major characters, each with stories just as, if not even more, tragic than this one.
Long story short, we always talk about how amazing Avatar is for the representation and art and animation and music and morals but we rarely ever talk about how amazing the story is. The horrible irony that Aang, a pacifistic monk who was kind and generous to everyone he met, inadvertently led to thousands of people dying in a century-long war—it’s one of the greatest stories that I’ve ever heard of. This doesn’t even include all of the other consequences we see throughout the series—villages being destroyed, families living in fear, people being dragged off to concentration camps in the middle of the night, kids turning into terrorists, refugees being forced to walk thousands of miles to get to a safe haven, the injuries, the fear, the trauma. (And this is all just in Book One. Don’t even get me started on the other two.) It’s hard to say that it’s all Aang’s fault but his disappearance certainly had a huge impact on the horrible things that occurred.
And the worst part is?
He knew.
it’s been years. dont make me cry about it again dammit
